Cathedral of the Assumption
Cathedral of the Assumption
The Cathedral of the Assumption is the oldest Catholic in Penang, formed in 1786 by the Eurasians of southern Thailand and Kedah. The Cathedral of Assumption was so named because the first group of Roman Catholics landed in Penang on the eve of the Feast of Assumption.
Originally founded at Church Street by Father Garnault in 1786, the cathedral was later moved to Farquhar Street in 1802. The building that is found today was built in 1860 by Father Manissol. Like many other religious landmarks in Penang, the cathedral underwent rennovations over the years. The Roman Catholic community built its existence in and around Farquhar Street.
The cathedral was elevated to the Cathedral of the Diocese of Penang in 1955.
