There are several requirements for a legal marriage ceremony in Malaysia: The couple must obtain a marriage license from the Registration Office and supply all necessary documentation. The normal procedure involves submitting an application at the District Registration Department, however this requires the couple to have been resident in Malaysia for a minimum of 7 days and the license could then take up to 21 days to process. It is possible to apply for a ‘fast track’ Special License at the Chief Ministers Department. If the Chief Minister is satisfied with the Statutory Declaration and no lawful impediment, he will grant a licence for marriage, which must take place within 1 month. For this process, a minimum stay of 6 nights in any one destination is recommended so that there is sufficient time to complete all documentation and bureaucratic procedures.
Original copies of Birth Certificates and Passports

• 4 x passport photographs
• If a divorcee, proof of Decree Absolute is required.
• If a widow/widower, copy of Death Certificate is required.
• Both parties need a statutory declaration stating their marital status from the British High Commission in Malaysia or from a local registrar in the UK (must not exceed 3 months validity from date of actual marriage).

Two witnesses are also required for solemnization of the wedding. Witnesses’ passports are required. Both parties must be over 18. If you are under 21 you must have written consent from your father in the form of a sworn affidavit. On the wedding day the couple will firstly partake in the signing ceremony at the Registration Office with all the necessary documents and then the remainder of the ceremony and the reception can be held back at the hotel/resort. Registered ceremonies are supposed to take place in a registration office but many registrars allow ceremonies in other locations eg. the beach, hotel grounds.

Then, pack your bags and head for the Oriental Inn tucked near the base of the imposing Gunung Mat Cincang (also known as Machinchang) and set within the self-contained Malaysian and Asian-styled tourist attraction called the Oriental Village.

The hotel was the venue for a grand and beautiful garden wedding recently. The couple, Ahmad Humaizi Mohd Nor and Yuniza Yazid, daughter of Lada Eco-Tourism Sdn Bhd managing director Yazid Jais, looked resplendent in their wedding finery.

More than 1,000 guests attended the ceremony held in the evening. By nightfall, the landscape had turned into a fairyland, complete with dazzling lights and decorative paraphernalia.

“The garden wedding is a new concept here in Langkawi. We want to encourage courting couples, both foreign and local, to come to Langkawi and have a truly memorable wedding,” says Lada Eco-Tourism Sdn Bhd manager Nor Diana Low Abdullah.

Lada Eco-Tourism Sdn Bhd owns and manages the hotel and the Oriental Village as well as other properties in Langkawi, including the Mutiara Burau Bay Resort and the Summer Palace which was one of the locations for the Hollywood movie, Anna and the King.

“The rules pertaining to foreigners marrying in Langkawi have been relaxed recently and it is much easier now to tie the knot on the island. We hope to attract more foreigners to have traditional garden weddings here,” adds Nor Diana.

Couples can choose from four wedding packages: Western, Malay, Indian and Chinese, with prices for the wedding reception starting from RM70 to RM150 per guest. The Garden Wedding concept can be tailor-made according to individual budgets.

The package includes the theme and concept of the wedding reception, wedding invitation card design, and itinerary for the evening (with entertainment and master of ceremony), consultation on make-up, hairdo and attire for the ceremony and other services.

For the honeymoon, the hotel has a choice of three suites and 30 rooms, all air-conditioned and tastefully furnished.

“The small number of rooms gives our guests assured privacy,” says the hotel sales and events management executive Marzuki Abdul Rahman.

All rooms were recently upgraded. They have contemporary furnishings and facilities, including a minibar, television with cable channels, piped-in music and complimentary coffee and tea-making facilities.

Guests with children below 12 years old are allowed to share rooms with their parents with no additional charge, up to a maximum of two children per couple.

“Besides enjoying a quiet holiday by the lakeside and mountain terrain, and not too far away the lovely beach, guests can shop at the village which is practically at the doorstep of their hotel room. This is really a value-for-money location,” says Nor Diana.

Free daily transfers to Mutiara Burau Bay Resort are available to guests who want to escape to the beach.

Dining is also hassle-free. Oriental Inn guests need only walk across the Prosperity Bridge, or suspended bridge, to get to the Oriental Bistro and Restaurant.

Guests can opt to dine in the outdoors at the terrace with a view of the garden village or have a nice dinner indoors while being serenaded by a live band.

There‘s also a spacious bar serving drinks and cocktails. This is a popular place to chill out.

Equally popular is the karaoke room on the first floor of the restaurant. Here, you can sing your heart out as there are more than 15,000 songs in six different languages (English, Bahasa Malaysia, Thai, Mandarin, Japanese and Korean).
