Malaysia intercity train services are offered by KTMB, it is a safe, hassle-free and relaxed-and-easy mode of travel between cities or to remote areas. The trains and services are generally good and cheap, although onboard food and condition of toilets can be further improved. The KTM intercity train service is a comfortable and affordable way to travel between Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and all the way to Thailand Bangkok. Most of the KTM intercity train services operate from Kuala Lumpur Sentral station.

There are two Day Express trains namely Ekspres Sinaran and Ekspres Rakyat and four Night Express trains namely Senandung Malam, Senandung Langkawi, Ekspres Wau and Ekspres Timuran.

The Malaysia KTM intercity train network consists of two main lines:

WEST COAST LINE / NORTH SOUTH LINE

The West Coast line runs from Padang Besar on the Malaysia-Thailand Border in Perlis (where it connects with the State Railway of Thailand’s network) to Singapore via Butterworth, Penang (for connections to Penang) and Kuala Lumpur. It is called the West Coast line because it serves the West Coast states of Peninsular Malaysia or the North South line because it connects all the way from Singapore to Padang Besar.

KTM Intercity Train Route / Timetable / Fare

EAST COAST LINE / JUNGLE RAILWAY

The East Coast line runs between Gemas in Negeri Sembilan and Tumpat in Kelantan. Gemas is the rail junction between the West Coast and East Coast lines. Like the West Coast line, it is called the East Coast line because it serves two of Peninsular Malaysia’s East Coast states, namely Pahang and Kelantan. In fact, it does not run along the coast at all and only meets the South China Sea when it terminates in Tumpat. It runs through the interior, often through deep jungle, thus earning the nickname “Jungle Railway”. Terengganu is the only state in Peninsular Malaysia not served by the railway network.

KTM Intercity Train Route / Timetable / Fare

There are also several branch lines – between Kuala Lumpur and Port Klang, Batu Junction and Batu Caves, Bukit Mertajam and Butterworth, Tapah Road and Teluk Intan, Kempas and Tanjung Pelepas, Kempas and Pasir Gudang, and between Pasir Mas and Rantau Panjang.

Tips

1) Plan your journey
- Leave your house early in order to avoid any distraction in order for you to arrive
at station. Be at station 30 minutes EARLY before train departure to avoid any

2) Check your travel details at ticket
- Ensure your journey date, time of departure, origin, destinations, coaches,
no of passengers is correct before you leave the counter.
- Kindly AWARE the time of train departure, as since 20th September 2008, there
are slight changes in timing that involves few trains to/or from South, North and
East Coast

3) Safety measure taken at platform and on board train
At platform:
a) Comply with all instructions given by Train Duty Officers at platform
b) Do not chase trains while train is in motion
c) Watch your steps and gaps between train and platform
d) Stay behind the yellow line

On board train:
a) Do not open the train entrance door while train is in motion
b) Avoid standing at the door and smoking is prohibited in the air-conditioned coach
c) Kindly ensure the safety of your children at all times during the journey
d) Ensure your belongings and luggage is safe with you

The Eastern & Oriental Express carries passengers on a three-day jaunt in luxury using sleeping-cars originally built in Japan for the New Zealand Railways Wellington-Auckland sleeper train, between Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Travel through dense rainforests and towering mountains past golden temples of Thailand, rubber plantations of Malaysia, remote towns and villages, and the urban forest of Singapore.

In Malaysia the train stops in Butterworth for a visit to the Spice Island of Penang. A checkered history of British, Malaysian and Chinese influence throughout time makes George Town colorful and diverse. From the people to the architecture, it’s a real melting pot of cultures. The visit by trishaw takes you from a Chinese clan house, impressive with its ornate, colorful and complex carvings, past Little India and the legendary Eastern and Oriental Hotel. This is a good opportunity to see a lot without walking in the stifling heat.

Those using this service to get to KLIA can check in their baggage at the Kuala Lumpur City Air Terminal in KL Sentral. The city check-in service however is only available to those flying Malaysia Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Royal Brunei Airlines. You may also use of KLIA Ekspress check-in services even when holding a KLIA Transit ticket.

** If you arrive in KLIA after midnight, the only choice of transport out is by taxi (50% Surcharge from midnight to 6am).

Tip 1 (Finding ERL): From the departure and arrival halls, follow the signs for KLIA express. Take the glass lifts on the far side which has KLIA express stickers pasted on the doors. This is important as only this lift will take you to the correct side of the building on Level 1 where the ERL counters are.

Tip 2 (Saving Money): KLIA Transit offers some “money saving option”. The pivot point are the Putrajaya/Cyberjaya and Salak Tinggi stations. Getting off at either stations during your journey, burning 30 minutes, and hopping on the next train to come by will save you some spare change depending on where you’re coming from. If you’re going end to end, you’ll skim a good RM19.30 off the full fare. But this is not very convenient since you have to physically get off the train and purchase the tickets from the counter at the respective stations. However, if you have time to spare and would like to do some sight seeing on the side at the station locations, then this will be the way to go.
