1. Malaysia's Tourism – Positive Growth
2. Little England resort @ Fraser’s Hill - Facelift
3. Vote For Sipadan As A New 7 Wonders Of Nature

Malaysia’s Tourism – Positive Growth

Despite the world economic crisis and recession in Singapore, its biggest tourism market – Malaysia attracted 21 million tourists in 2008, and projected growth is a positive one. However, travellers are expected to change their way of spending money and vacation, with more people opting to fly economic class or on low cost carriers than business class, choosing four or three star hotels compared to five stars and spend less money at restaurants. (Pacific Asia Travel Association)

Malaysia, which attracted about 21 million tourists in 2008, can still harbour for positive growth despite the world economic crisis and recession in Singapore, its biggest tourism market, said the Pacific Asia Travel Association (Pata).
He said that despite the expected increase, travellers are expected to change their way of spending money and vacation, with more people opting to fly economic class or on low cost carriers than business class, choosing four or three star hotels compared to five stars and spend less money at restaurants.

Little England resort @ Fraser’s Hill – Facelift

A Rm20 milion facelift will be used to restore the 88 yr old Little England resort under the Ninth Malaysia Plan. Completion of renovation is timed for the Fraser’s Hill International Bird Race 2009.

The tourism board wants to preserve the English colonial concept which has been a main attraction at fraser’s Hill. A total of RM4.5 million has been spent to spruce up Puncak Inn and some bungalows. Efforts had been made to retaine the 19th century features, such as fireplaces and chimneys, while adding wooden huts and safety ropes along the jungle trails for the safety of bird-watchers and nature lovers.

Vote For Sipadan As A New 7 Wonders Of Nature

Sipadan Island, formed by living corals engulfing an extinct volcano cone which took centuries to develop, has one of the world’s richest marine biodiversity in its ecosystem and known for being among the world’s best diving sites.

You can now help vote Sipadan into the New 7 Wonders of Nature list by voting at www.sabahtourism.com

The online voting started in January and will end on July 7, and Sipadan Island which is currently ranked 17th under the Island category, must be at least among the top 11 to qualify to the next round

1. Despite economic downturn medical tourism rises in Malaysia

2. 'Malaysia Truly Asia’ campaign wins top honour at Berlin tourism fair

3. Plans to revamp 'second home' programme

Despite economic downturn medical tourism rises in Malaysia

Despite the current economic situation, Malaysia is gaining prominence as a destination for medical tourism. More international tourists are seeking medical treatment in the country and the number of private healthcare providers catering to medical tourism has sprung up in recent years. Currently, Indonesians account for 70% of medical tourists to Malaysia.

According to the Association of Private Hospitals of Malaysia, the Malaysian medical tourism sector is expected to contribute RM540mil in 2010 by treating about 625,000 medical tourists.

“Malaysia Truly Asia” campaign wins top honour at Berlin tourism fair

“Malaysia Truly Asia” advertising campaign won the gold award in the print advertising category at the world’s largest tourism fair, the International Tourismus-Boerse (ITB), in Berlin, Germany, recently. The campaign’s basic premise that Malaysia is the melting pot of some of Asia’s greatest civilisations – the Malays, Chinese and Indians as well as other indigenous groups – is helping to place Malaysia as a world tourism destination and one which highlights the essence of the country’s unique multi-racial, religious and cultural attractions against all others.
Malaysia was also awarded third place for the “Most Popular Destination in Asia” by Go Asia Awards, after Thailand and Indonesia.

Plans to revamp ‘second home’ programme

Malaysia plans to ramp up its second home programme to derive more economic spin-offs, noticeably in the area of investments and real estate, where nearly RM5 billion of the latter were sold to foreign applicants over the past five years.

Participants can now ‘invest actively in Malaysia’ and those above 50 years old can work in critical sectors of the economy where locals lack the expertise or experience – subject to the approval of an expatriate committee.

Approved participants get a 10-year social visit pass.

The government also recently announced it would offer permanent resident status to high net-worth individuals that bring more than US$2 million (RM7.2 million) into the country for investments or savings.

The same consideration would be made for ‘highly skilled foreign professionals’.

Malaysia Health, Education and Eco Tourism regulations to be relaxed

The Tourism Ministry will set up a special secretariat to ease entry procedures (view, speed up and tighten the procedures) to boost specific tourism sectors including health tourism, education tourism and eco-tourism. Currently the problem is there is no one-stop centre that could make it easier for the entry of these tourists.

Malaysia Tourism Sector Urged To Enhance Facilities

All those involved in the Malaysian tourism sector have been asked to be better prepared to increase and enhance special facilities to attract tourists from West Asia. Among the facilities and infrastructure that can be enhanced to draw tourists from West Asia are separate swimming pools for men and women and for hotel managements to have more signs in Arabic and engaging Arabic-speaking staff.

Zoom! Malaysia

Zoom! Malaysia is a new campaign launched to replace the previous “Cuti-Cuti Malaysia” campaign. This campaign is focusing on urging Malaysians to give priority to local holiday destinations and encourages them to look at Malaysia with a new perspective.

We Malaysians need to work harder to make the country a first choice destination not only for tourists around the world but for ourselves too, and this include by keeping our cities, beaches, and kampung clean, it would help make tourists feel more comfortable.
