Johor Bahru Sentral (JB Sentral) will be the new transport hub in Johor Bahru – housing a KTM train railway station and a bus station. It was designed to upgrade the existing railway station at Johor Bahru in response to the increasing demand of rail commuters.

New bus and taxi pick up points are provided along Jalan Jim Quee to enhance this new rail station.
The bus station is expected to handle approximately 15000 bus passengers per hour, to reduce traffic congestion on the 20 year-old Larkin Terminal Station. Two (2) multilevel car parks (comprising 726 car parking bays) are situated over both sides of the JB Sentral to provide parking facilities for the entire project.

As part of the new gateway, the JB Sentral will be located along Jalan Tun Abdul Razak. The new rail station sits over new tracks that will be connected to a swing bridge to cross the Straits of Johor to Singapore. A pedestrian bridge connects JB Sentral to Johor Bahru City Square and Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak (Tun Abdul Razak Complex), also known as the new CIQ – JB immigration.

Transportation chief advisor, Dato Ong Seng Yon has announced that an LRT system will be constructed around year 2015 to include JB Sentral as its main terminal. The project is expected to complete by end of 2019. The system would be known as RAPID JB (RAngkaian Pengangkutan Integrasi Deras Johor Bahru).

It will consists of 2 lines known as:

    * Tebrau Line

Stations: JB Sentral-> Wadihana-> DangaCityMall-> Jln Abiad (Century Garden) ->Plaza Pelangi->Crystal Crown->PublicBank Taman Sentosa-> Mutiara Motors-> Kampung Melayu Baru-> Jln Kempas-> Kilang Yeos-> Taman Molek-> Taman Johor Jaya-> Carrefour-> AEON Tebrau City

South of Masjid Jamek are the teeming streets of Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown. This crowded, colorful area is the usual mélange of Chinese signs and shops, activities and noise, and is bounded on two sides by Jl Hang Kasturi and Jl Sultan. The central section of Jl Petaling is closed to traffic and is a frantically busy market, at its most vivid at night when brightly lit.

Starting from Masjid Jamek (1), cross over to the northern side of Jl Tun Perak and walk one block east to Lebuh Ampang. A short detour up this narrow street reveals a South-Indian Chettiar community, full of moneychangers and street vendors selling Indian sweets and flower garlands. Note the striking old shophouses (2) at Nos 16 to 18 and Nos 24 to 30, and the ceramic peacock-tiles on the Chettiar House (3) at No 85.

Backtrack across Jl Tun Perak and follow the path along Jl Benteng until the street splits at the clock tower. This is Medan Pasar, the site of the city’s original market and gambling sheds set up for early tin miners. The row of painted shophouses (4) at Nos 2 to 8 on your right was all designed by the same Chinese architect in 1906.

Head south to where Medan Pasar meets Lebuh Pasar Besar. On the southeastern corner is the OCBC Building (5), an imposing Art Deco structure built in 1938 for the Overseas Chinese Banking Company.

Turn east along this street, passing the whimsical, pink and old Federal Stores Building (6), dating from 1905 and taking up an entire side of the block on your left. Opposite is the rose-pink and white MS Ally Company (7), one of Kuala Lumpur’s longest-running and most venerable pharmacies.

Turn south at the next block onto Jl Tun HS Lee. Twenty meters down on your right is the orange and green Bank Simpanan Building (8), bearing the date 1914. It was originally a printing press and the upstairs is now home to the Backpackers Travellers Lodge.

At the end of this block, cross Lebuh Pudu, turn right and, after 25 meters, duck left into an alleyway, which leads to the small Taoist Sze Yah Temple (9). The construction of this temple was organized by “Kapitan China” Yah Ah Loy himself in 1864 and to the left of the altar is a statue of his likeness. You may see worshippers crawling in homage and penitence under the altar in front of the main shrine. Outside the temple are two gilded sedan chairs.

Exit the way you came in, cross the street and walk through the alley opposite the enormous Central Market (10). Previously the city’s produce market, the Central Market is an Art Deco building that was saved by preservationists and refurbished as a center for handicraft, antique and arts sales.

At the southern end of the market, turn left into Jl Cheng Lock, then right onto Jl Tun HS Lee and head south, passing Hotel Malaya and the bright red, incense-wreathed Guan Di Temple (11). The figure at the rear of the temple is Guan Di – the Taoist God of War – and on the altar infront of him are arrayed an impressive sword and halberd.

Cross over to the western side of the street to No 163, the Sri Mahamariamman Temple (12) and then walk to the end of the block and take a look at the old shophouses on Jl Sultan. You can detour to the Chinese tea shops on the southern side of the street leading back along Jl Panggong and Jl Balai Polis. Finish by walking south to the end of Jl Petaling, where you’ll find two late 19th century Chinese temples; Chan See Shu Yuen Temple (13) and, across Jl Stadium, the Koon Yam ( Guan Yin ) Temple (14), dedicated to the God of Mercy. The central effigy inside Sakyamuni, to whose right is a statue of the South Sea Guan Yin; to his left is a Qian Shou (Thousand Hands) Guan Yin.

Malaysia’s wealth of national parks provides many challenges for the adventurous traveler. Top of the list is Taman Negara, the country’s showcase national park; there are excellent trails and waterways to explore and good facilities. From the inside of the park, you can climb Gunung Tahan, Peninsular Malaysia’s highest peak; this would be a nine-day trip. Also on the peninsular are the Kenong Rimba, and Endau-Rompin national parks. Endau-Rompin has Malaysia’s largest surviving population of Sumatran rhinos, although don’t count on spotting these elusive beasts.

Malaysian Borneo has 16 national parks to choose from, including the marine reserves and the rarefied heights of Mt Kinabalu; you will need to set aside three days to reach this summit. In Gunung Mulu National Park allow four days to tramp the Headhunters Trail and climb to the jagged Pinnacles. A day is sufficient for Niah National Park with its interesting giant caves. Give yourself two days in Boko National Park to hunt out exotic flora and fauna, including rare proboscis monkeys, and to enjoy walks along the rugged sand- and mangrove-fringed coastline.

From Kuala Lumpur, make a day drip to Pulau Ketam for tasty seafood served in an atmospheric fishing village. Moving north, Pulau Pangkor has good beaches but if possible, spend the night on the exclusive resort island of Pulau Pangkor Laut with access to Emerald Beach, one of the prettiest stretches of sand in the world.

Langkawi has several lovely beaches including Pantai Cenang and Pantai Kok. You can also make boat trips to the nearby island of Pulau Dayang Bunting. If you’re heading for Pulau Perhentian, choose Pulau Perhentian Besar if you want to escape the crowds. On the gorgeous Pulau Tioman head over to Juara on the east coast for some quiet relaxation. There are numerous other equally attractive (and less touristed) islands off the east coast; try the islands of Seribuat Archipelago.

In Sarawak, good beaches can be found in both Bako National park and Similajau National Park. Sabah, though is home to Malaysian Borneo’s best collection of beaches and islands. Make time for swathes of white sand around the islands in Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park. If you are interested in the conservation of turtles, then drop be Turtle Islands National Park.

The main reason people come to Sabah is to climb Mount Kinabalu; assaults on Malaysia’s highest peak can be launched from the state capital, Kota Kinabalu. All up, a trip to the mountain and back, plus exploring the trails around the national park headquarters and a visit to Poring Hot Springs, will take you five to six days. Kota Kinabalu is also the jumping-off point for the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, a cluster of five lovely islands offering beautiful beaches.

A six-hour bbus ride will take you east to character-filled Sandakan, the base for various wildlife-viewing activities, including a visit to the Turtle Islands National Park, Sepilok Orang-Utan Rehabilation Center and Sungai Kinabatangan, one of the best places in Southeast Asia to see fauna.

From Sandankan, head south towards the Danum Valley Conservation Area, where you can enjoy various ecotourism activities ” including a not-to-be-missed night drive safari ” from the luxurious Borneo Rainforest Lodge. Finished up your trip in Semporna, from where you can organize diving and snorkeling trips to Pulau Sipadan and other nearby islands.

If you’ve only two weeks to spare, then it is best to stick to either coast of the Peninsular. Those interested in city life should stick to the west coast, spending four days in Kuala Lumpur, a couple of days each in Penang and Melaka. This will leave you a few days spare to add in a trip to the Cameron Highlands.

If it’s the great Malaysian jungle you’ve come to see, then top of your list should be Taman Negara; four days will allow you to get the most out of the park, including spending a night or two in a jungle hide for wildlife spotting.

Confining yourself to the east coast, you could go straight from KL to Kota Bahru and then work your way down the coast taking in Kuala Terengganu and Pulau Perhentian for a few days.

Three weeks is enough to pack a fair amount of Peninsular Malaysia, Use Kuala Lumpur as a base for excursions out to traditional Kampungs ( villages ) of Kuala Selangor, the Batu Caves, FRIM, even the hill station of Bukit Fraser. Escape the crowds with a visit to Bukit Larut, Malaysia’s oldest hill station, then pitch yourself back into the fray amid the bustle of Penang’s Georgetown.

Return to KL at the start of your second week, then hit the jungle trails and waterways of Tman Negara or, if you are up for a more off-the-beaten-track jungle experience, head for either the Endau-Rompin or Kenong Rimba national parks. If that’s not your scene, then consider a tour up to the east coast, passing through Cherating, Marang, Kuala Terenganu and Kota Bahru. You could finish up with a leisurely week at Pulau Perhentian.

Then again if you have your fill of beaches, spend your last few days taking the jungle trail near Kota Bahru back south, perhaps pausing at Kuala Lipis en route. Finish up in Melaka, where you can enjoy the mix of cultures, the colonial history, shopping and a fine range of cuisines.
