Why a Malaysia Vacation?

A Malaysia vacation is high on the list for many travelers, and recent surveys shows that a Malaysia vacation is one the top travel choices. There’s an endless range of attractions and activities on a Malaysia vacation that cater for the cosmopolitan shopper, cultural enthusiast, historical buff and nature-lover. Malaysia is also a friendly country and one that’s extremely good value for money to travel in. Recently, UBS Swiss banking company ranked Kuala Lumpur as the world’s best travel bargain above the likes of New York, Istanbul, and many others. An undervalued Malaysia currency, low inflation rates and the heavily subsidized oil prices (you get to travel around in low taxi fares), make a Malaysia vacation an unrivaled travel bargain.

When’s the best time to visit Malaysia?

Check the 2009 Events Listings to plan your trip.

The best time to visit Malaysia is to avoid the two peak tourist seasons. The first peak tourist season falls roughly from the beginning of December to the end of January, covering the major public holidays — Christmas, New Year’s Day, Chinese New Year. Hari Raya Puasa, celebrating the end of Ramadan, shifts dates from year to year. During this season, Asian travel routes are booked solid and hotels are maxed out. Favorable deals are rare, because most of Asia takes annual leave at this time.

Try to avoid east coast destinations and Island Malaysia between November and January. Otherwise, Malaysia can be enjoyed at any time of year as the weather is generally hot, sunny and fairly uniform; it’s rare to have a day without showers and unusual to have a day without sunshine. Take light summer clothes, carry an umbrella and an extra warm sweater if visiting the hill stations.

Singapore’s school holidays occur from mid-May through to the end of June, and again during November and December, when families are likely to flock to Malaysia’s seaside resorts, particularly the budget and mid-priced properties. Persoanally if you have a flexible time schdule, this period is definitely NOT the time to visit Malaysia. I hate to say it, but I’ve heard numerous complaints about resort holidays that have become nightmares when guests have to wrestle to get to the breakfast buffet and must suffer screaming children around the pool. Malaysia’s school holidays fall about 1 or 2 weeks each during March, June, and August, then again from November through December – best time to visit Malaysia? I bet not!

The second peak season falls in the months of June, July, and August, and can last into mid-September. During this period hotels are booked solid with families from the Middle East as this is school holiday season for many of the region’s countries. After September it’s quiet again until December. Both seasons experience approximately equal tourist traffic, but in second peak season months that traffic may ebb and flow.

Climate
Climate considerations will play a factor in your consideration for the best time to visit Malaysia. If you want to visit any of the east coast resort areas, the low season is between November and March, when the monsoon tides make the water too choppy for water sports and beach activities. During this time many island resorts will close. On the west coast, the rainy season is from April through May, and again from October through November. The Northeast Monsoon arrives the beginning of November and stays until mid-March, when temperatures are slightly cooler, relatively speaking, than other times of the year. The heaviest rainfall occurs between November and January, with daily showers that sometimes last for long periods of time; at other times, it comes down in short heavy gusts and goes quickly away. Wind speeds are rarely anything more than light. The Southwest Monsoon falls between June and September.

The temperature is basically static year-round. Daily averages are between 67°F and 90°F (21°C and 32°C). Temperatures in the hill resorts get a little cooler, averaging 67°F (21°C) during the day and 50°F (10°C) at night.

Holidays
During Malaysia’s official public holidays, expect government offices to be closed, as well as some shops and restaurants, depending on the ethnicity of the shop owner or restaurant owner. During Hari Raya Puasa and Chinese New Year you can expect many shop and restaurant closings. However, look out for special sales and celebrations. Also count on public parks, shopping malls, and beaches to be more crowded during public holidays, as locals will be taking advantage of their time off.

Most travelers comment on the friendliness and hospitality of Malaysians. It really is exceptional.

Malaysia is not only friendly, it is one of the safest countries worldwide and absolutely safe to travel to any part of the country.

Even though Malaysia is relatively safe, the only crime-free place is heaven, so here are things to watch:

STREET CRIME: It has begun to grow in the big, particularly in tourist areas: pickpockets and bag-snatchers. Defense is the same anywhere: wear your purse/bag strap over your chest (not just dangling from your shoulder) and hold your bag close.(read more on street crimes)

Women travelers should be sensitive to local customs and attitudes.

You must answer this question to fit your personal tolerance for risk. If you believe the statistics and look at it rationally, you’ll probably go. If you’re going to worry about safety a lot while you’re there, the worry may make your trip less pleasant, and so you probably shouldn’t go.

Many governments post detailed security notices on the Internet. These are useful reading if you are concerned about safety when you travel:

Why visit Malaysia?
Malaysia is a friendly, beautiful, culturally rich country and one that’s extremely good value for money to travel in. It’s modern enough to be comfortable yet full of natural beauty to be mesmerized.

Video: Visit Malaysia 2007 Official Advertisement

Culture and Art: The mix of cultural influences in Malaysia is the result of centuries of immigration and trade with the outside world, particularly with Arab nations, China, and India, however each culture remained largely intact; that is, none have truly been homogenized. Traditional temples and churches exist side by side with mosques.

Special activities: Malaysia also offers some very special activities, and if you make room for one or two of them, they will enhance your trip immeasurably. You can choose to spelunk in the world’s largest single cave chamber in Sarawak’s extraordinary Gunung Mulu National Park, or a diving trip in the tropical waters off both Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo where you can find some of the world’s best scuba diving sites. A visit to the rain forest of Malaysia should be high on the list for anyone who has an affinity for nature, and it should be: the Malaysian rain forest is unique in the world, and the oldest on the planet.

Cuisine: Malaysia is a fabulous place to enjoy the art of eating and drinking. Malaysian Food is a multicultural fusion of Malay, Indians, Chinese and a bit of Peranakan, and this create a unique food that’s not only colorful, spicy and eclectic, but also downright tasty.

Come enjoy Malaysia with me, you can really see, feel, touch, smell and taste the hidden treasures of Malaysia. With so much to see and so much to do, one will never complain about feeling bored here. So, what are you waiting for? Come and visit Malaysia!
