Kuala Lumpur is the dynamic and vibrant Malaysian capital that was established during the 1800s by tin miners from China and hosts numerous tourists each year who hop on flights to Kuala Lumpur from London and other large cities throughout the world. If you are planning to be one of the many people who take advantage of the cheap flights to the city each year, the following are a series of several places which are certainly must-sees.

Bird Park
The city of Kuala Lumpur contains the largest of the world’s free flight aviaries and consists of 20 acres of land in the city’s center. The aviary can take several hours to traverse and houses a brilliant display of temperate and tropical birds.

Petronas Towers
The Towers, which were completed in the year 1998, were designed by a man named Cesar Pelli. Until very recently, the Petronas Towers was the tallest of all the world’s buildings. Although it is not possible to travel to the Towers’ top, visitors are able to walk on the observation bridge that serves to connect the towers. One tower also contains a shopping center that boasts several designer boutiques, a petroleum museum, and restaurants. The Towers also features beautiful gardens that contain a playground for children, fountains, and a wading pool.

Dining in the Coliseum
The Coliseum was constructed when the British ruled the land and has been visited by a number of famous persons. The hotel has remained largely the same with the menu of the restaurant remaining the same for the past 90 years.

Butterfly Park
One of the most famous spots for tourists and their children is the Butterfly Park that is located close to the Bird Park. It is a picturesque and beautiful landscape full of fish ponds, fountains, and lush vegetation.

Chinatown
Chinatown is a must-see for any visitor. The nigh market is particularly enjoyable for tourists as they can spend a lovely evening haggling with shop vendors who sell almost everything from herbal remedies to knock-off watches. It is also a wonderful place to sample local foods and fruits.

Craft Center
The Craft Center, which is located in the downtown area of the city, is a cultural center in which tourists are able to purchase the crafts of various artisans while watching them work. The center is also able to teach visitors about skills such as batik printing. The Craft Center also hosts numerous cultural and arts events during the year.

Batu Caves
The Batu Caves are a brilliant collection of several caves that are over 400 million years old and were formed from limestone. The Batu caves were found 100 years ago with the largest being transformed into a temple for Hindu worship. The cave with the temple contains 272 steps that can be climbed by visitors who can view the religious artifacts and sculptures.

Nature Walk
Although the city is a cosmopolitan location, there are numerous opportunities to enjoy nature as well. If you want to enjoy the rainforest, you can visit the FRIM or Forestry Research Institute of Malaysia that is located about an hour from the city’s center.

One of the major attractions of Malaysia Tourism is the mosques – these mosques are a very integral part of the everyday life of Malaysians. The architectural styles of the mosques in Malaysia can be classified into 3 types with corresponding built periods, which are as follows:

Vernacular Mosques (18th century to date)

Examples of some building features which were built in response to the warm and humid climatic conditions are pitched roofs to enable rain water to run off quickly, stilts to raise the mosques above ground level to avoid floods; and many openings including louvered windows, fanlights and carving panels to allow natural cross ventilation of air. Building materials such as timber, bamboo, bricks, stone, clay tiles and attap are widely used in the vernacular mosques as they are easily available locally. Like the Malay houses, the vernacular mosques portray high level of craftsmanship.

Colonial Mosques (1795 to 1957)

Most of the mosques built during the colonial period are architecturally different from the vernacular mosques in terms of scale and proportion, form, features and building materials. Domes (either onion-shaped or top-shaped), turrets, classical columns, pilasters, pointed arches, keystones, pediments and plastered renderings on cornices and capitals are common features found in the colonial mosques. Effectively, the British architects, at the turn of the century, had combined the Moorish influence and the classical styles to portray an Islamic image to the mosques.

Modern Mosques (1958 to date)

The architectural styles of the modern mosques have changed gradually in parallel with the development in structural advances, construction methods, contemporary designs of mosques as well as increased local interests toward Islamic architecture. With the advent of science and technology, modern mosques are constructed in a larger scale to accommodate the increasing number of Friday congregations. Concrete, bricks, steel, stone and marble are commonly used in the construction of modern mosques. Onion-shaped or top-shaped domes, tall minarets and high ceilings are common features found in the modern mosques. The modern mosques usually incorporate well-designed landscape elements including plants, water features, patterned pavements, garden lightings and signages.

Thaipusam is celebrated by Hindus on the full moon day in the Thai month of the Tamil calendar, which is in January or February.

Also known as Thaipooyam or Thaippooyam in Malayalam, it is a festival to mark the birth of Lord Murugan, the youngest son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

The festival also marked an occasion when Parvati gave Murugan a vel (lance) so he could vanquish the evil demon Soorapadman.

Hindu devotees in Malaysia celebrated Thaipusam on 8th Feb 2009 to mark the birth of Lord Murugan by going to several temples in the country.

The chanting of “vel, vel” rose above Batu Caves as an estimated 1.2 million Hindu devotees and visitors thronged the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple for Thaipusam 2009.

Here are some amazing photos of the celebration of Thaipusam 2009.

Johor Bahru Sentral (JB Sentral) will be the new transport hub in Johor Bahru – housing a KTM train railway station and a bus station. It was designed to upgrade the existing railway station at Johor Bahru in response to the increasing demand of rail commuters.

New bus and taxi pick up points are provided along Jalan Jim Quee to enhance this new rail station.
The bus station is expected to handle approximately 15000 bus passengers per hour, to reduce traffic congestion on the 20 year-old Larkin Terminal Station. Two (2) multilevel car parks (comprising 726 car parking bays) are situated over both sides of the JB Sentral to provide parking facilities for the entire project.

As part of the new gateway, the JB Sentral will be located along Jalan Tun Abdul Razak. The new rail station sits over new tracks that will be connected to a swing bridge to cross the Straits of Johor to Singapore. A pedestrian bridge connects JB Sentral to Johor Bahru City Square and Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak (Tun Abdul Razak Complex), also known as the new CIQ – JB immigration.

Transportation chief advisor, Dato Ong Seng Yon has announced that an LRT system will be constructed around year 2015 to include JB Sentral as its main terminal. The project is expected to complete by end of 2019. The system would be known as RAPID JB (RAngkaian Pengangkutan Integrasi Deras Johor Bahru).

It will consists of 2 lines known as:

Zoom! Malaysia encapsulates the main aim of the domestic tourism campaign 2008 / 2009 which is urging we Malaysians to give priority to our local vacation destinations and encourages us to look at Malaysia with a different view. Zoom! Malaysia will replace the previous “Cuti-cuti Malaysia” campaign.

Going on vacation overseas used to be a luxury many of us took for granted but with uncertainty in the global economy, vacationing at home has now become a sensible choice.

The campaign title “Zoom! Malaysia” is a catchy phrase which transcends language, culture and racial barriers.

We Malaysians have to work hard to make Malaysia the first choice in the world’s tourism destination and doing everything that can make it more beautiful and attractive to tourists, and to ourselves.

Zoom! Malaysia, the brainchild of Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman, was created to get tourists — especially locals — to look at Malaysia with fresh eyes.

Join the recovery efforts mobilizing around the world to assist cyclone victims in Myanmar. Your donation to either of these organizations will help survivors of the cyclone and other natural disasters rebuild their communities, and their lives.

As hungry people swarmed the few open shops and fistfights broke out over food and water in Myanmar’s swamped Irrawaddy delta Wednesday as a top U.S. diplomat warned that the death toll from a devastating cyclone could top 100,000.
