Negri Sembilan, wedged between Selangor and Malacca, has several courses that have become synonymous with Malaysian golf. Most of the layouts have been craved out of what used to be rubber plantations, and make for some exciting golf, including a few that host international tournaments.

The upkeep of these courses is generally good, with much effort being put into their maintenance. Some of them have been remodeled and upgraded.

Overall, Negri Sembilan is another state where golf can be enjoyed to the fullest, with challenges to suit all skill levels, depending on where and when you are playing.

Malaysia Travel Guide touches on a sampling of what the state has to offer:

Port Dickson Golf & Country Club is set in tranquil surroundings and features an 18-Hole Layout that stretches 5,900 metres from the championship tees. Split into two nines – the opening Rusa 1 is 2,981 metres while the homeward Rusa 2 is 2,919 metres. By and large, they make up for a relatively flat course whose character becomes defined with numerous water and sand hazards, tall trees and other obstacles. However, with the Straits of Malacca just a stone’s throw away, the winds that sweep off it often have a big say in how tough this layout plays.

Staffield Golf Resort is perhaps the best known of Negri Sembilan’s courses. It is a 27-hole layout that was crafted by Australian Graham Marsh and, like several of the others in the state, it is constructed on former rubber plantation. Officially opened in 1994, it spans 335 acres and is primarily made up of rolling hills and water hazards that can be a big bother. Marsh took the liberty to pepper the course with more than 80 bunkers, merely adding to its character and employing them, in most cases, as obstacles to make the tract even more of a challenge.

Tucked away on the outskirts of Negri Sembilan’s capital and in the developing Seremban 3 Township, Paradise Valley Golf Resort is a charming course set on a hilly terrain. Among its characteristics is water, a lot of it, that strengthens its makeup for a decent test. Part of a plan that envisions a fully integrated township complete in harmony with the surrounding environment, Paradise valley is a par-72 18-hole course that measures 6,072 metres from the black tees.

Port Dickson’s Royal Palm Springs Golf Club is a flat course parked along the shores of the straits of Malacca. And with the exceptionally taxing difficulties, given it is a resort course, the winds that blow off the sea often bring the most damage to scorecards. Measuring 6,174 metres from the back tee boxes, Royal Palm Springs is an 18-hole layout that plays to a par-72 and is situated on the 500 acre Palm Springs Resort City.

Like many of the older clubs, Seremban International Golf Club has had its highs and lows and is now firmly back in the reckoning as one of the country’s best. And while it might first appear, on face value, as a rather easy layout, it has immense character and proved a difficult challenge, even for the professionals. Crafted by members of the club, it measures 6,252 metres from the championship tee boxes and plays to a par-72. The 18 holes that comprise cowgrass fairways and Serangoon greens are well kept as is the clubhouse and the amenities.

About 10 minute drive from Bahau, ERA Golf & Country Resort is Negri Sembilan’s newest par-72 18 holes course. Opened earlier this year, it was designed by local golf course architect, Bobby Lim, and stretches just beyond 6,000 metres. It is set in a valley, bordered by forests and presents one with an impressive sight when driving there. Much of the layout has had its surrounding terrain kept intact and Lim used a lot of the old, tall trees to good effect as he shaped the courses around them.

There are many other golf resorts scattered around the region. Here’s the list of golf courses in Negri Sembilan:

About 10 minute drive from Bahau, ERA Golf & Country Resort is Negri Sembilan’s newest par-72 18 holes course.

Opened earlier this year, it was designed by local golf course architect, Bobby Lim, and stretches just beyond 6,000 metres. It is set in a valley, bordered by forests and presents one with an impressive sight when driving there.

Much of the layout has had its surrounding terrain kept intact and Lim used a lot of the old, tall trees to good effect as he shaped the courses around them.

Almost immediately, golfers get to sample just what the owner Datuk Chua Tiong Moon, wanted from his tract when playing the second hole. The 194-metre par-3 is Era’s signature hole and a delightful challenge it is too. It plays slightly downhill to a green that has been built up and jealously guarded by water and sand. The tee shot is played over a pond, which also comes into play on the right for anything heavily sliced, while a cluster of bunkers add to the degree of difficulty on the same side, and even more sand on the left.

The closing hole at Era is a 455 metre par-5. Another deceptively tricky hole, the task here is to keep the ball on the fairways and stay clear of the water on the right and the thick forest on the left. Even if one does get the ball on the green in two, the putting surface provides challenges of its own, given its narrowness and contours.

A buggy-course, Era has a driving range for those who might want to sharpen their skills before taking up the challenge, For members and their guests, there is a swimming pool to splash about in. For food, there is a restaurant that serves a cross-section of local and international cuisine.

Plans are afoot to build a hotel adjacent to the swimming pool, and, according to Chua, will ready before the middle of next year (2008). This will no doubt entice outstation guests to spend a night or two there, and play more than just one round of golf. But golfers can take advantage of attractive stay and play packages offered by Era Hotel in Bahau – RM 88 nett for twin sharing room and 18 holes golf, plus buggy (weekdays) or RM 118 nett on weekends. For golf alone, it is RM 40 and RM 60 (weekdays and weekend, respectively).

Venue of the 2007 Salcon Negri Masters, Seremban International Golf Club is a course with a long and distinguished history dating to 1952.

Like many of the older clubs, it has had its highs and lows and is now firmly back in the reckoning as one of the country’s best.

Seremban international opens with a 316 metres par-4, where a slight draw will take advantage of a fairway that doglegs to the left. A note should be made of the second shot that could spell trouble if sliced too much as there is out of bounds on the approach.

The par-4 tenth, which stretches 412 metres from tee to green, underwent a complete makeover this year. It included the stripping of the entire hole, the relaying of the subsoil to improve the drainage and the returfing of the fairway and green.

Accuracy all the way is required if anything is to be gained from this hole. It is narrow and has out of bounds on the left and punishing rough on the right.

SIGC closes with the 455 metres par-5 whose fairway slopes from the right to left and doglegs to the left. The green is an elevated one that has bite of its own in contours that penalize any rashness.

The opening hole at Royal Palm Springs Golf Club is a straight forward par-4 that measures 324 metres. The demand here is to hit is straight off the tee and do the same with the approach shot because, while it takes a direct route to the green, it is narrow. Tall pine trees line the right side of the fairway and the rough on the right can also cause problems.

No. 15, which used to be a par-4 has been converted to a par-3, and remains the layout’s signature hole. A medium length 154 metes, this hole plays uphill to a contoured green that has a beautiful view of the sea, thus its stature as Royal Palm Spring’s main attraction.

Adjacent to the golf club is the self contained and integrated resort, comprising, among other things, holiday villas and apartments, and a string of recreational activities.

The two nines – Valley and Paradise – stretch 2,879 metres and 3,193, and are not exceedingly difficult but the hillside tees, undulating fairways, sand bunkers, grass hollows, water hazards and contoured greens do make it interesting.

The Valley Nine is where the signature Peninsular Hole can be found. It is the 157 metres par-3 6th that is played from an elevated tee, which provides for a striking view of the green and hilly backdrop.

The hole is surrounded by water and a cluster of trees, and demands accuracy and good club selection.

The second hole plays the toughest at Paradise Valley. Although it is a short par-4 at just 314 metres, the narrowness of the landing area and the second shot, which is played uphill to a severely undulating green, provide its bite.

The water on the left, which runs more than halfway from tee to green, is a factor in this challenge as trying to play right could mean pushing the ball too much that way. Trouble will be encountered on the other side of the buggy track – bush.

The two-storey clubhouse sits high on a hill and overlooks parts of the course with a great view. It comes with a driving range, golf shop, golfers’ terrace and banquet hall, among other things.

The club enjoys multiple accesses from the North-South Highway and is a mere 10 minutes from Seremban, 20 minutes from Kuala Lumpur International Airport, 25 from Port Dickson and 45 minutes from Kuala Lumpur.

Course superintendent Richard Ho explained that among the upgrades in progress were the flattening of the teee boxes, the specialized treatment to certain areas in the fairways and an exercise to increase the speed of the greens.

“The application of herbicides to some areas of the Bermuda grass fairways was necessitated by the invasion of foreign grasses and pests. But it was only carried out on those areas which were affected,” said Ho.

“In the case of the greens, we have acquired new machinery that now allows us to double or triple cut the Tifdwarf putting surfaces in a single day, which in effect, means that our greens are much faster than before. To this end, on an average day – for members. We can cut the greens to a speed of say 8. We can take it up to maybe 10 for tournaments.”

Staffield’s three nines – Western, Southern and Northern – each have their own identity.

The Western Nine, which stretches 3,108 metres, is the friendliest of the trio. Here, the toughest hole is the 379 metres par-4 fourth. It features water all along the left with a few mounds on the right. The green, which is two tiered, can prove tricky even for the better putters.

The 3108 metres Southern Nine is certainly the most popular of the three and also the most interesting. This challenge requires the golfer to use both mind and skills, and a great deal of shot-making is demanded if a good score is to be had.

It also boasts Staffield’s signature hole – the 164 metres par-3 eighth. It is by far one of the most scenic holes of the local circuit, but also requires much accuracy. This beauty plays over water to a green that has a wide front, which tapers down as it move towards the back.

The Northern Nine, at 3197 metres is the longest of Staffield’s three nines. On this layout, the layout, the 370 metre par-4 5th hole is one example of where the golfer has to put on his thinking cap.

It provides two options from the tee box – left or right. Those who choose to aim left will target a narrow landing area with the boundary fence not too far off. To pull it off would mean one is nearer to the green that using the other route. To go right is a lot safer, regardless of the fact that you are playing towards the lake.

Staffield’s clubhouse is Tudor-styled. It is an imposing huge structure that has the Centrepoint Golfers’ Terrace, a golf shop and driving range all within the complex. Peppers Restaurant, which serves delicious local and international cuisine, is found within the confines of the clubhouse. There are conference and meeting facilities as well.

Staffield is ideally situated, no more than a 45 minute drive from Kuala Lumpur along the North-South Highway and even less time from KLIA.

The tourist town of Port Dickson, situated in the western region of Negri Sembilan, has three courses. One of these, Port Dickson Golf & Country Club, is an ideal getaway for the whole family.

It is set in tranquil surroundings and features an 18-Hole Layout that stretches 5,900 metres from the championship tees.

The club’s acting general manager, Muhammad Shazwan said, “The wind can be a key issue in how well one plays this course. The crosswinds and headwinds play important roles here, and can easily ruin a good round of golf.”

Muhammad also said that the renovation work being undertaken at PD Golf Club is scheduled to be completed in stages, at the end of this year (2007) and in the first half of 2008.

Among the work being carried out are the installation of drains along fairway, designed to improve the drainage, and the deepening of the lakes, which have become “clogged with silt”.

“These are just a couple of renovation exercise we have embarked upon to improve the presentation of the course,” said Muhammad. “Of course, other work is being done to upgrade the place. We are also applying remedial treatment to the fairways and landscape, which will go a long way towards making the course even more presentable.”

The 17th hole is particularly eye-catching. It is a 142 metre par-3 played over water to an island green. And while the putting surface is relatively large, there are enough undulations across it to make for some tricky putts.

An hour’s drive from the bustle of Kuala Lumpur, Port Dickson Golf Club has on-site accommodation in the form of holiday apartments. And with swimming pool, tennis and volleyball courts, and a string of other recreational activities, there is something for the whole family to enjoy here, never mind the seaside which is in close proximity.
