Komtar Penang

KOMTAR (Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak) was named in honour of the second Prime Minister of Malaysia, the late Tun Abdul Razak bin Hussein. At the time of its construction, the complex was the largest urban redevelopment project undertaken by the Malaysian Government.

It was designed to meet the growing demand for civic, administrative, commercial, and housing space in the city. KOMTAR also serves as a symbol of order and stability for the town and the province.

Although the goal of the project was to preserve the historic character of the town, its modern form stands in stark contrast to the smaller buildings around it.

KOMTAR was once the shopping haven for Penangites as shoppers could purchase almost anything under the sun. But there are much better places for shopping compared to Komtar these days.

If you are at KOMTAR, go up to the 55th floor as it offers a panoramic view of the city. On a clear sunny day, you can see a stunning vista of Gunung Jerai in Kedah.

Parallel to Jl Masjid India is Jl Tuanku Abdul Rahman lined with shops, noted for their wonderful fabric, antiques and jewellery. Old and new mingle on Jl Tuanku Abdul Rahman; modern complexes rise above retro buildings. Gulatis Silk House (162/164, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman) and Euro Moda (No. 126 & 128), both more recent additions, deserve mention for their exquisite fabric, studded with sequins and beads. This long stretch is also a good spot to hunt for oriental antiques and art.

Udani Carpets (No. 393A) and Shalini Carpets (No. 40) offer quite an extensive range. Stock up on winter essentials like boots, cardigans, scarves and thermal undergarments at P Lal Store (No. 135 Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman), the city’s oldest department store. Also check out the pewter at Selangor Pewter Showroom (No. 223). If you need to recharge, check out the 1920s Coliseum Café for a cold beer and heavenly, but spicy, prawn sambal, accompanied by their home-baked Chinese toast with REAL butter. Despite the dismaying crush of tourist coaches, The Craft Cultural Complex (Jalan Conlay) is still a great venue for batik, rattan baskets and other traditional handicraft sourced from around the country. In fact, the complex’s main attraction is its community of artists and their workshops.

Pop into Kuala Lumpur Central Market to pick up a host of local handicraft and other quirky souvenirs. It’s little wonder that this art deco market is top on every traveller’s list. It offers a genuinely local feel and, most importantly, friendly prices. Remember to hone your bargaining skills first!

My pick is Collectables Centre (G43) cluttered with every imaginable collectible from old Craven cigarette tin boxes, charcoal irons and oil lamps to century-old Nyonya tea sets and hairpins. Next stop Songket & Sutera Asli (M53), for beautiful songket (richly woven silk) fabric from the East Coast. Prices begin at RM 75 and then climb indefinitely depending on workmanship.

Be sure to also visit the House of Silver (G15) to take home, a Kelantanese tea set, antique silver dining wear, jewellery or the Malay keris. For kites of every shape and size, (the wau bulan being most popular), stop by Wau Tradisi (M51). Prices here range from RM 198 to RM500.

Batik is wall-to-wall throughout the market. Before heading off, rummage through the pottery, pewter, wayang kulit (shadow puppets), traditional costumes and local snacks or have your portrait painted. Master Chin (1/F, 3rd bridge), the resident fortuneteller might offer some tips on paying for all that stuff clattering about in your suitcase-on-wheels. Stop to refuel at the Precious Old China (M2), an antique and art gallery doubling as a restaurant and bar serving authentic Nyonya cuisine.

Mid Valley Mall is located in between the Federal Highway and Jl Bangsar. Way back when it was constructed, everybody dismissed it as a failure because of its proximity to Federal Highway – the place where they breed traffic congestions. But NOW, the congestion to get into Mid Valley Mall is even worst that the federal highway itself , and thats a show of popularity for Mid Valley Mall. What can you get here that you cant get elsewhere? Nothing – they have everything that you can get elsewhere, its all concentrated under one roof. Anchor tenants here are Carrefour, Jusco and Metro jaya.

Mid Valley Mall also houses a 36,000 square foot MPH bookstore, an 18-screen multiplex cinema, the largest in Asia, as well as a 38-lane bowling alley. And in between you have small retails selling fashion clothing and accesories, food court and restaurants, pharmacies, electrical shops, banks, hardware store and many many stores, too numerous to mention here.

There is a shopper’s shuttle that leaves from the Ritz Carlton and then picks up guests at the J.W Marriot (J.W Marriot & Regent), Istana Federal (Federal & Century), Allson Genesis and Shangri-La then stops at Megamall. Check with Segar at the Ritz Carlton concierge to see if the shopper shuttle is still running (schedule below).
GROUP A Mondays to Fridays and Sundays only Pick-Up Point Dorsett Regency (Ritz Carlton & Dorsett) Departure 9:50am Arrival 1100 am Departure from Megamall 1430 Arrival at Ritz Carlton 1535

To get to Mid Valley from KL Centre, take the monorail to KL Sentral and cross the road to take the Putra to Bangsar Station (one station away at RM1). From Bangsar station, take the exit to your left where you will see a bust stop towards Mid Valley. You could take the free shuttle (Trinton Bus) direct to Mid Valley South Court. Do check the frequency of the bus which could be at an interval of 30 mins to an hour.

Alternatively, take a taxi. About a 10RM taxi fare from Bukit Bintang.

Lot 10 Shopping Mall is a fashionable rendezvous that caters for upmarket shoppers and is linked to Sungei Wang Plaza by a covered pedestrian bridge. This huge shopping mall, with its distinctive green and blue striped facade, has numerous chic restaurants where the city’s hip crowds like to hang out.

Its anchor tenant, Isetan, a Japanese-owned Department Store, takes up a portion of the mall’s floors. Here, you can buy all things Japanese from sushi to cushion covers all the way from Japan. Lot 10 Isetan also has a high concentration of boutiques and gift shops, as well as branded apparel, accessories, sports gear and cosmetics. The top floor of the store is devoted to exclusive designer clothes.
